The faculty members (professors and lecturers) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais are hosted by departments. The departments are administered by one of three types of collegiate units: Schools, Faculties, and Institutes. Administratively, Schools, Faculties, and Institutes enjoy an equivalent executive status as Academic Units under the university, so they provide no practical difference among each other in administrative terms. They are the main Colleges of the university.

The School of Architecture, founded in 1939, is a beacon of modernism in Belo Horizonte, offering architecture and design courses. Meanwhile, the School of Fine Arts, nestled in the Pampulha campus, nurtures talent in visual and performing arts, including animation and digital arts.

The School of Information Science is dedicated to training information science professionals, offering courses in Library, Archival, and Museology. The School of Music, originally housed in the Conservatory building, migrated to Pampulha and offers a rich curriculum in musical performance, composition, and more. In the realm of health sciences, the School of Physical Education, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy offers courses in physical education, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

The UFMG School of Nursing, founded in 1933, holds a prominent position nationally for its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as its research and extension projects. The School of Professional and Basic Education is unique, focusing on pre-higher education levels, including kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, and various high school courses.

The School of Engineering, a powerhouse with 13 faculty departments, hosts a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. UFMG's Veterinary Medicine School, renowned in Brazil, offers courses in aquaculture, veterinary medicine, and surgery, along with cutting-edge research labs and veterinary facilities.

The Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences encompasses seven departments and plays a foundational role in the university's core units. It boasts a distinguished faculty engaged in cutting-edge research across various fields.

The Faculty of Law and State Sciences, situated in the heart of Belo Horizonte, offers undergraduate degrees in law and state sciences, along with postgraduate programs.

The Faculty of Medicine, organized into 12 departments, leads the charge in healthcare research and education. It offers a range of undergraduate courses and graduate programs across diverse medical disciplines.

The Faculty of Economics hosts a variety of undergraduate courses and postgraduate programs, emphasizing research in business administration, economics, and related fields.

The Faculty of Education focuses on pedagogy and educational sciences, offering interdisciplinary programs and research opportunities.

The Faculty of Pharmacy, with four departments, conducts experimental research in pharmaceutical science and related domains.

The Faculty of Letters offers diverse emphases within its Letters undergraduate program and runs graduate programs in linguistics and literature.

The Faculty of Dentistry trains dental professionals and conducts research in various dental specialties.

UFMG's Institutes are centers of excellence in specialized fields of study. The Exact Sciences Institute provides undergraduate courses in actuarial science, computer science, statistics, physics, mathematics, and more, with notable faculty contributing to groundbreaking research.

The Biological Sciences Institute of the UFMG hosts the undergraduate course in Biological Sciences, 12 Post-Graduate master's and doctoral degrees awarding programs, and 10 faculty departments.

This institute offers 6 undergraduate courses: Administration, Agronomy, Environmental and Agricultural Engineering, Food Engineering, Forest Engineering, and Zootechny.

This unit hosts three undergraduate courses: Geography, Geology, and Tourism.

In the realm of research, UFMG is a formidable player, registering over 1,060 national and international patents in 2016, the highest among Brazilian higher education institutions. In 2014, the university made waves on the global stage, publishing over three thousand articles in influential international newspapers and magazines, cementing its position as a scholarly powerhouse.
