The RWTH Aachen University is the second-largest university in Germany for technical studies, with over 47,000 students. NDR reported on research conducted by RWTH Aachen for the US Department of Defense in 2013. The university declined to provide details about research partners and projects. Rector Schmachtenberg clarified that the projects funded by the Pentagon were focused on basic research rather than military research.
The Aachener Friedenspreis (Aachen Peace Prize) criticized RWTH Aachen for its stance on military research, accusing the university of not adhering to the principles of the civil clause. They viewed the university's mention of dual-use issues as an attempt to downplay its involvement in research contracts financed by the Pentagon.
