Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg

Baden-Wurttemberg - Germany
The Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, also known as Ruperto Carola, is a prestigious university in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Founded in 1386 by Elector Ruprecht I. on the instruction of Pope Urban VI., it is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the oldest university in Germany with continuous academic operations. Its name honors these two rulers: Ruprecht I. and Karl Friedrich, Margrave of Baden. The university received its founding privilege from Pope Urban VI. in 1385 and commenced teaching in 1386, making it one of the oldest universities in the Holy Roman Empire north of the Alps and the second oldest existing university in the German-speaking world. Although the University of Erfurt received its founding privilege from Pope Clement VII. in 1379, it didn't start teaching until 1392. Furthermore, the University of Erfurt remained closed for nearly two centuries.
In the winter semester of 2022/23, the university had nearly 30,000 enrolled students and 535 professors. The university buildings are primarily located in the Heidelberg Old Town, the Bergheim district, and the Neuenheimer Feld area. One notable feature is the presence of two medical faculties, one at Heidelberg University Hospital and the other at Mannheim University Hospital.
The university is recognized as one of the eleven excellence universities in Germany, having successfully participated in the Excellence Initiative (2007–2012) and its follow-up program, the Excellence Strategy (since 2019), funded by the federal government and the states. It is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities and the Coimbra Group. Approximately 18% of students come from abroad. The university ranks highly internationally and enjoys a strong academic reputation. Heidelberg, as the university's location, is associated with 57 Nobel laureates, with the university itself having 33 Nobel laureates associated with it.
The founding of Ruperto Carola in 1386 by Elector Ruprecht I. with papal approval from Urban VI. aimed to establish a intellectual center in his fragmented territory, the Electoral Palatinate, to attract foreigners and provide education for church and state officials in light of the Western Schism. Graduates of the Parisian Sorbonne, loyal to the Pope residing in Avignon, were unable to enter ecclesiastical service in the Palatinate, which was aligned with the Pope in Rome. This created a demand for local theological education.
