With its official inauguration on February 25, 1967, the university gained the esteemed designation 'Universität Ulm' (Medizinisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Hochschule) from the Baden-Württemberg state government, solidifying its status as a renowned institution of higher learning.
Exciting growth unfolded as the university gradually introduced a wide range of academic disciplines. From pre-clinical medicine and physics to mathematics, chemistry, and beyond, the curriculum expanded to accommodate evolving educational needs. Notably, the faculties of electrical engineering and computer science commenced in the winter semester of 1989/90, laying the foundation for technological advancement. The construction of new buildings for engineering, known as the 'University West,' commenced in 1990, showcasing visionary architectural designs by Otto Steidle, complemented by stunning landscapes crafted by Latz + Partner and captivating color schemes by Erich Wiesner.
The University of Ulm has garnered well-deserved recognition for its academic excellence and pioneering spirit. In the esteemed Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 rankings, the university was honored as Germany's top young university in 2014 and 2015. Globally, it secured an impressive 15th position among universities established less than 50 years ago, showcasing its remarkable progress. Additionally, the university's commitment to excellence is further highlighted by its commendable 135th position in the World University Ranking, released under the auspices of the University of Oxford in 2016. Dr. Michael Weber is an esteemed professor at the University of Ulm, specializing in Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, and Serious Games.
