The University of Milano-Bicocca, known as UNIMIB, is a public institution in Milan, Italy, offering a diverse range of educational opportunities at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels.
UNIMIB's roots trace back to the need for a new university when the University of Milan, with around 90,000 students in the 1990s, faced overcrowding. The Bicocca area in the north of Milan was chosen as the site for this new institution. It was officially founded on June 10, 1998, as the University of Milano-Bicocca. The University of Milano-Bicocca boasts a distinctive campus located in the northern outskirts of Milan. This area was once home to the Pirelli industrial complex until the late 1980s. Architect Vittorio Gregotti masterfully transformed this industrial space into a thriving urban complex that houses the university's research laboratories and student residences.
At UNIMIB, there are fourteen Departments and two Schools, each dedicated to advancing education and research in their respective fields. These academic entities contribute to the university's dynamic learning environment and foster collaboration among students and faculty. The University offers a wide array of academic programs spanning various fields, including Economics Management and Statistics, Business and Law, Statistics and Quantitative Methods, Law, Medicine and Surgery, Psychology, Biotechnology and Bioscience, Physics "Giuseppe Occhialini", Informatics System and Communication (DISCo), Mathematics and its Applications, Material Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Educational Sciences, Human Sciences for Education "Riccardo Massa”, Sociology and Social Research
One distinguishing feature of UNIMIB is its campus layout. Spread across Milan, Monza, and even the Maldives, the university's 28 buildings create a one-of-a-kind academic environment. With its primary buildings situated near the Greco Pirelli railway station, accessibility is excellent for both local and international students. The Bicocca Campus is a dynamic space, offering students state-of-the-art facilities, including modern classrooms, computer workstations, libraries, residences, and sports facilities. Its commitment to sustainability is evident through eco-friendly initiatives.
Since its establishment in 1998, University of Milano-Bicocca has not only contributed to education but also breathed new life into the local area. The redevelopment of old Pirelli factory premises into state-of-the-art research facilities and student spaces is a testament to its commitment to the community. UNIMIB actively participates in prestigious rankings like Times Higher Education, U-multirank, and UI GreenMetric. These rankings help recognize its commitment to teaching, research, international outlook, and environmental sustainability. With a strong emphasis on scientific research, UNIMIB offers comprehensive support for its researchers and faculty members.
The university's Research Area facilitates the sharing of scientific findings and promotes public engagement. UNIMIB welcomes students from partner universities worldwide through initiatives like the Erasmus+ program, fostering a diverse and international academic community. UNIMIB promotes inclusivity through mentorship programs, support services for students with disabilities, and various scholarships, including those for refugees.
