University of Belgrade Overview

The University of Belgrade ''Univerzitet u Beogradu'', with its origin dating back to the early 19th century, holds a prominent place among Europe's cultural heritage. Established in 1808 by Dositej Obradović as the Belgrade Higher School, it later merged with Kragujevac-based departments, becoming a leading institution in Serbia. Throughout its two centuries of existence, the University has played a vital role in the country's development, producing numerous influential graduates who have contributed significantly to various fields.

With over 97,700 enrolled students and 4,800 academic staff members, the University of Belgrade comprises 31 faculties, 12 research institutes, a university library, and 9 university centers. The faculties are grouped into social sciences and humanities, medical sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and technological sciences.

The university boasts a rich history of academic excellence, especially in fields such as law, economics, philosophy, philology, electrical engineering, and medicine. The Faculty of Law, established in 1808, is a regional leader in legal education and has produced numerous experts and scholars in various branches of law. The Faculty of Economics, founded in 1937, was the first center for the study of economics in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The Faculty of Philosophy, dating back to the early 19th century, continues to be a cornerstone of academic education. The Faculty of Philology offers courses in linguistics and literature in multiple languages. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, established in 1894, has made significant contributions to the field. The Belgrade Medical School, founded in 1920, has trained more than 30,000 students.
