The University of Salvador (USAL) is a vibrant private Catholic university located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Established on June 8, 1944, by the Society of Jesus, it has a rich history that traces back to its origins within Colegio del Salvador. This led to the founding of the "University Faculties of Salvador" on May 2, 1956. Subsequently, on May 15, 1958, these faculties evolved into the "University Institutes of Salvador" and finally, on December 3, 1959, the journey to its current status as a recognized private university began with significant milestones, leading to its official recognition under the name we know today.
Today, with campuses spanning Buenos Aires City, Buenos Aires Province, and Corrientes Province, USAL stands as a dynamic hub of diverse academic offerings. Its roots are firmly intertwined with the fervor of educational independence, a sentiment that echoes the historical spirit of the Catholic Church's foundational role in establishing the country's earliest seats of learning.
During the mid-20th century, the landscape of private education underwent transformation under the influence of government initiatives, particularly the enactment of Decree Law No. 6.403. This legal framework, enacted during the administration of Atilio Dell'Oro Maini, Minister of Education, marked a significant shift towards private education. As a result, institutions such as the University of Salvador were established, contributing to the diversification of Argentina's educational landscape.
USAL's institutional evolution was shaped by the transition from its initial oversight by the Society of Jesus to a governance structure entrusted to lay individuals. In March 1975, a group of laity assumed responsibility for preserving the university's identity and mission, a milestone that reinforced its commitment to its foundational values.
The University of Salvador (USAL) is distinguished by its diverse array of faculties, each offering a comprehensive range of programs that cater to a multitude of academic pursuits. Within the Faculty of Engineering, students can embark on educational journeys encompassing Computer Science, Information Systems, and Industrial Engineering. The Faculty of Psychology beckons learners with offerings such as Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Psychopedagogy, and University Technician in Nursery Garden. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences provides a platform for exploration in fields like Agronomy, Veterinary Science, University Technician in Livestock Production, and Forestry Engineering, which span across dual campuses. The intricate realm of Economics and Business is covered in the Faculty of Economics and Business, offering avenues such as Actuarial Science, Banking Administration, Marketing, and International Business, among others. Education and Social Communication Sciences, on the other hand, encompass realms of Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, and Communication Sciences, bolstered by specialized master's and postgraduate programs. The Faculty of Law stands as a bastion for legal studies, featuring programs like Law and Auctioneer and Broker. Social Sciences delve into areas like Political Science, Sociology, and Public Security. Philosophy, Literature, and Oriental Studies explore Philosophy, Literature, and Oriental Studies, while the School of Modern Languages cultivates language skills in contexts ranging from translation to interpretation. History, Geography, and Tourism house diverse subjects like History, Tourism and Hotel Management, and Environmental Sciences. Medicine offers a comprehensive portfolio, including Nursing, Dentistry, and Diagnostic Imaging Technology. These faculties, intertwined with an extensive range of disciplines, come together to shape USAL's holistic educational landscape, ensuring that students find their academic passions catered to while embarking on enriching learning journeys.
The university's history also encompasses notable events, such as the controversial conferral of an honorary title to Admiral Emilio Eduardo Massera on November 25, 1977. This ceremony sparked significant discourse, reflecting complex sociopolitical dynamics of the time. This episode, along with subsequent discussions and actions, underscores the university's connection to historical developments and its role within a broader societal context.
USAL boasts a robust array of faculties and academic programs, ranging from Engineering, Psychology, and Economics to Communication, Law, Medicine, and Arts and Architecture. Its commitment to academic excellence is demonstrated through the breadth of courses and specializations it offers, reflecting a dedication to nurturing a diverse pool of knowledge seekers.
In terms of infrastructure, USAL has expanded its reach beyond its central Buenos Aires location. The establishment of the "Nuestra Señora del Pilar" campus in 1987 marked a significant step in this direction, providing a 67-hectare site for academic and recreational activities. The subsequent development of facilities, including academic buildings, a library, and sports amenities, illustrates the university's dedication to creating an enriching and holistic learning environment.
Furthermore, the "San Roque González de Santa Cruz" campus, situated in the northeastern province of Corrientes, serves as a hub for agricultural and veterinary education. The campus's inception in 1989 stemmed from a collaborative effort involving local stakeholders, reflecting USAL's commitment to community engagement and fostering partnerships that enhance educational opportunities.
