The National University of Tucumán (UNT) is a prestigious Argentine public university located in the city of San Miguel de Tucumán. Established on May 25, 1914, and later nationalized in 1921 through Law 11.027, the university has emerged as a leading institution in the region. With its main campus in San Miguel de Tucumán, the university boasts 13 faculties, 2 university schools, and 7 pre-university schools.
History:
The university's roots can be traced back to the late 19th century when "liberal courses" of law were initiated at the National College. Despite early efforts, the project for a university in the province faced resistance, particularly from the capital city, which opposed decentralization. However, the persistent endeavors of key figures like Juan B. Terán and Joaquín V. González eventually led to the approval of the university's creation on July 2, 1912.
On May 25, 1914, during the presidency of Dr. Roque Sáenz Peña, the University of Tucumán was officially inaugurated. The institution's founding principles, symbolized by the motto "Pedes in terra ad sidera visus" (Feet on the ground, eyes on the stars), emphasized a regional focus while fostering a modern, open, and scientifically oriented university committed to societal challenges.
Nationalization during the 1920s and 1930s solidified the university's mission in research and education, with notable contributions to regional development, arts, and culture.
Research and Extension:
The National University of Tucumán collaborates closely with the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet), promoting science and technology in Argentina. Various research centers and institutes associated with the university, led by faculty members and researchers from different faculties, engage in cutting-edge research.
Projects conducted by the university address diverse areas, such as archaeological studies of Inca ruins, the development of advanced technology to track vicuñas in the Argentine Puna region, investigations on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and the creation of a computerized system for measuring visual acuity.
Editorial and University Services:
The university established the Editorial de la Universidad Nacional de Tucumán in October 2006 to publish books and academic works resulting from evaluations by experts. The editorial aims to prioritize works produced within the university's academic units, institutes, and other higher education institutions in Argentina and abroad.
Extension activities at the university encompass various areas, including medical care, social actions, culture, and educational programs for adults and persons with disabilities. The university also provides support in technology, housing, and welfare services to enhance the overall university experience.
University Facilities:
The University of Tucumán's notable assets include the Parque Sierra San Javier, an area protected by the university and encompassing diverse natural features. Additionally, the university operates the LW 83 TV Canal 10, one of the most influential television channels in the province, and LRK 319 Radio Universidad Tucumán, a local FM radio station that broadcasts 24 hours a day.
Yacimientos Mineros Agua de Dionisio (YMAD), a mining company with state, provincial, and university involvement, traces its origins to the discovery of the site by a university professor who donated it to the UNT in 1948. However, the use of funds generated from mining activities led to legal investigations and allegations of environmental contamination.
The National University of Tucumán remains committed to its regional roots while striving for excellence in research, education, and community engagement. Its dedication to serving its students and society at large continues to shape its standing as a leading institution in Argentina and beyond.
