The Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) is a prominent Brazilian public institution of higher education, founded in 1934 and located in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Covering an expansive area of approximately 22 square kilometers, UFRGS is known for its diverse academic offerings and distinguished faculty.
UFRGS has consistently been recognized as the best federal university in Brazil for the eighth consecutive year, as well as the top university in the Southern Region of Brazil. This prestigious reputation is supported by its commitment to excellence in various fields, including exact sciences, humanities, and health sciences.
In global rankings, UFRGS has secured high positions, ranking 5th nationally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and 4th nationally in the QS World University Rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds, UK. Moreover, in a comprehensive ranking by the Ministry of Education of Spain, UFRGS holds the 152nd position among 17,000 institutions worldwide and ranks 3rd in Latin America.
UFRGS has excelled in educational quality evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Education in Brazil, consistently achieving the highest scores. This is attributed to factors such as student performance on the Enade test, exceptional infrastructure, highly qualified faculty, and strong indicators in postgraduate programs.
The university continues to maintain its status as the best federal university in Brazil, as confirmed by the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), part of the Ministry of Education. In the latest evaluation, UFRGS achieved an impressive General Course Index (IGC) of 4.29, the highest rating on a scale from 1 to 5.
UFRGS has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century when it was initially established as the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry in 1895. Over the years, it expanded to encompass various faculties and institutes, ultimately becoming the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 1968.
The university's extensive campus spans 22,005,051.71 square meters, divided into several campuses, including the Central Campus, Health Campus, Valley Campus, Olympic Campus, and North Coast Campus. Within this vast infrastructure, UFRGS offers a comprehensive educational environment that includes over 500 laboratories, numerous libraries, auditoriums, a clinical hospital, a publishing house, a museum, a botanical garden, an astronomical observatory, and various other facilities.
UFRGS boasts a robust research ecosystem, with over 700 registered research groups and a focus on both basic and applied research across diverse fields. The university has made significant contributions to the preservation of paleontological sites in Rio Grande do Sul and has a dedicated Paleontology Museum located within the Institute of Geosciences.
Additionally, UFRGS supports extracurricular groups and entrepreneurial initiatives across its campuses. These initiatives foster innovation and technological development, particularly in fields like Chemistry, Physics, Biociences, and Engineering.
The university has also played a pivotal role in higher education access and diversity through its implementation of a quota system, which reserves a portion of admissions for students from public schools, with half of these slots reserved for self-declared Black, Brown, or Indigenous individuals.
UFRGS utilizes the National High School Examination (ENEM) as a criterion for admissions, which was adopted in 2010. ENEM scores account for 10% of the final admission score, with the remainder determined by the university's vestibular exam.
Despite occasional challenges and controversies, including political interference in leadership appointments, UFRGS remains a beacon of academic excellence, research innovation, and educational inclusion in Brazil.
Born in Alagoas and residing in Porto Alegre for over 30 years, this UFRGS Full Professor specializes in engineering with a focus on water resource management, renewable energy, and environmental infrastructure. With a diverse educational background, including a Ph.D. from the University of Bristol, England, and post-doctoral studies in Environmental Planning at the University of California, Davis, he has held numerous leadership positions within UFRGS.
