Universidad Central de Chile (UCEN), also known as the Central University of Chile, holds the distinction of being the first autonomous private university in the nation. Established in 1982 within Santiago de Chile, UCEN has carved its place as a trailblazer in the realm of private higher education. This pioneering institution has achieved full institutional autonomy, an accomplishment underscored by its ability to confer a diverse array of academic titles and degrees independently, setting it apart as a distinctive entity within the Chilean university landscape.
Situated in Santiago's University District, UCEN's main hub, Casa Central, is complemented by three additional buildings, an extension center, and a sports facility encompassing Parque Almagro. This sprawling infrastructure spans an impressive expanse of over 80,000 square meters. In alignment with its commitment to access, UCEN has extended its reach to La Serena, Coquimbo Region, where it has established a prominent presence since 2003.
UCEN's academic prominence is further fortified by a coveted four-year accreditation (out of a potential seven) bestowed by the Chilean National Accreditation Commission (CNA-Chile), spanning from January 2022 to January 2026. This endorsement underscores UCEN's academic eminence. Noteworthy accolades include UCEN's ranking as the 34th among Chilean universities in the esteemed SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) for the year 2022, alongside securing the 28th position in the prestigious AméricaEconomía rankings of 2021. UCEN's commitment to excellence is further validated by the international recognition of its Architecture program by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) since 1992, an attestation to its rigorous academic standards and professional integrity.
UCEN's inception can be traced back to the historic moment of March 4, 1982, when Santiago bore witness to the establishment of UCEN as a non-profit Private Corporation. Eminent figures such as Carlos Blin Arriagada and Luis Castañeda Carrasco lent their vision to this significant milestone. Over the years, UCEN has been steered by a succession of rectors, each contributing to the university's growth and evolution. From Carlos Blin Arriagada in its formative years to the current leadership of Santiago González Larraín, these rectors have played a pivotal role in shaping UCEN's trajectory.
UCEN's organizational framework is characterized by its dynamic configuration, encompassing five faculties and Technical Careers. Collectively, UCEN offers a spectrum of 35 master's programs, 35 undergraduate programs, 8 advanced technical programs, and an array of continuing education initiatives. These faculties span a diverse array, including Economics, Government and Communications, Engineering and Architecture, Education and Social Sciences, Law and Humanities, as well as Health Sciences.
The university's infrastructure is exemplified by the iconic Casa Central and strategically designed campuses, including Campus Gonzalo Hernández Uribe and Campus Vicente Kovacevic II. UCEN's dedication to scholarly enrichment is evident through its conferral of Honorary Doctorates upon esteemed individuals such as Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle and María Teresa Ruiz González.
Integral to UCEN's identity is the vibrant Federation of Students (FEUCEN), a representative body championing student voices and engagement within the university's pursuits. Governed by an executive committee and supported by dedicated councils, FEUCEN embodies the energy and dynamism of UCEN's diverse student community.
