About University of Chile

University of Chile Overview

The University of Chile is a prestigious institution of higher education in Chile, founded by law on November 19, 1842, and officially established on September 17, 1843. It holds the distinction of being the oldest university in the country, and its main campus, known as Casa Central, along with most of its facilities, is located in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago.

Originating from the republican reform of the colonial Real Universidad de San Felipe, the University of Chile emerged as its legal successor, boasting a rich academic, scientific, and extension history. It has played a crucial role in addressing national and regional issues and has been a decisive contributor to Chile's development since its inception. This institution has earned recognition as one of the nation's finest universities, owing to its leadership and innovation in science, technology, humanities, and arts, encompassing research and postgraduate education.

Affectionately known as the "Casa de Bello" in honor of its first rector, the eminent humanist Andrés Bello, the University is deeply rooted in a classical, humanistic, and secular culture. It is one of the 18 universities belonging to the Consorcio de Universidades del Estado de Chile (CUECH) and one of the 27 institutions forming the Consejo de Rectores de las Universidades Chilenas (CRUCH).

Over the years, the University of Chile has witnessed the graduation and academic contributions of numerous intellectuals and prominent Chilean leaders, including 20 Presidents of the Republic, 179 National Prize recipients, and 2 Nobel laureates.

The university boasts an impressive campus spread across more than 4 million square meters, encompassing five campuses, research buildings, healthcare facilities, museums, theaters, observatories, and sports infrastructure. As of 2019, the institution hosts over 40,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, offering a diverse range of academic programs, including 71 undergraduate, 39 doctoral, and 115 master's programs.

Given its public nature, the University of Chile actively engages in cultural outreach through initiatives such as the Teatro Nacional Chileno, its stable artistic ensembles (Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile, Ballet Nacional Chileno, Camerata Vocal, and Coro Sinfónico), and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC) and the Museo de Arte Popular Americano Tomás Lago.

Currently, the University is accredited by the Comisión Nacional de Acreditación (CNA-Chile) for a 7-year period (maximum) from December 2018 to December 2025. It holds the 2nd position among Chilean universities according to the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2022 and tops the ranking by AméricaEconomía in 2021. Additionally, it is one of the four Chilean universities listed in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) securing the top position. Moreover, it ranks among the top 11 Chilean universities in the QS World University Rankings 2020 and is among the top 10 in the Times Higher Education ranking 2020.

The history of the University of Chile traces back to the period following Chile's political independence when the idea of establishing a new institution of higher education in the country emerged. This led to the creation of the Instituto Nacional, intended to promote neglected areas of knowledge left behind by the rigid academic structure of the Real Universidad de San Felipe.

However, the Instituto Nacional gradually absorbed the functions of the University of San Felipe, resulting in an academic stagnation by the mid-1830s. President Manuel Bulnes decided to shut down the faltering colonial institution and replace it with a new organization dedicated to serving the newly established republic. The influential humanist Andrés Bello played a significant role in advocating for this change and was subsequently elected as the first rector of the new University of Chile.

On September 17, 1843, more than 13 years after his arrival in Chile, Andrés Bello delivered the famous inaugural speech of the University of Chile. In his address, he emphasized the role of arts and sciences in strengthening societies throughout history and highlighted the interconnectedness of knowledge. He expressed the University's commitment to disseminating knowledge for the betterment of the nation, stating that "the University of Chile has been established with this special purpose."

Under the University's influence, numerous initiatives flourished during the 19th and 20th centuries. The publication of the Anales de la Universidad de Chile, the oldest periodical in Latin America, commenced in 1843, focusing on arts, science, and humanities. The University expanded its educational offerings by creating the Escuela Práctica de Arquitectura in 1848 and the Academia de Pintura in 1849, initiating studies in fine arts in the country.

During this time, the University fostered significant scientific, cultural, and academic collaborations with institutions such as the Smithsonian Institute in Washington (1852) and Harvard University (1856). In 1863, construction began on the "Palacio de la Universidad," now known as the "Casa Central," becoming the principal headquarters of the University of Chile.

Throughout its history, the University of Chile has faced numerous challenges, including periods of political intervention and financial crises that have affected its operations. However, the institution's commitment to academic excellence, research, and service to the community has prevailed, positioning it as a leading institution of higher education in Chile and the region.

The University of Chile continues to nurture future generations of leaders, intellectuals, and professionals, striving to meet the demands of an ever-changing world while preserving its rich history and commitment to the progress of Chile and humanity as a whole.
