The University of the Andes (UANDES) is an autonomous, private, and Catholic Chilean institution founded on September 8, 1989. It is located in Santiago, Chile, and draws inspiration from the legacy of Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei.
UANDES holds a 6-year accreditation granted by the Chilean National Accreditation Commission (CNA-Chile) spanning from December 2012 to December 2028. It ranks 10th among Chilean universities according to the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2022 and occupies the 11th position in the 2021 AmericaEconomía ranking.
UANDES was established by a group of entrepreneurs and academics, including Eduardo Fernández León, Matías Izquierdo Menéndez, and Eduardo Guilisasti Gana.
In 1990, the Faculty of Law commenced its activities, followed by the Faculty of Medicine and the Institute of Philosophy. Over time, new programs were added, resulting in a current total of 22 undergraduate programs, 10 bachelor's programs, and a comprehensive range of academic offerings.
The university is situated at the San Carlos de Apoquindo Campus, featuring nine buildings, including the ESE Business School, the Engineering Building, a library, the Central Building, classrooms, a degree hall, and administrative offices. UANDES also has two proprietary clinical centers – a health center in San Bernardo and the University of the Andes Clinic on campus.
The university has been led by notable individuals such as Raúl Bertelsen Repetto, Oscar Cristi Marfil, Orlando Poblete Iturrate, and José Antonio Guzmán Cruzat.
UANDES offers 26 undergraduate programs leading to professional degrees and 10 Bachelor's programs. It notably stands as the first non-Council of Rectors (CRUCH) affiliated private Chilean institution to offer a Medicine program. UANDES offers a range of health-related programs, including Medicine, Dentistry, Nutrition and Dietetics, Nursing, Psychology, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, and Obstetrics and Puericulture.
UANDES excels in bridging engineering and business disciplines, offering programs such as Administration of Services, Commercial Engineering, Civil Engineering, and International Business. The university covers humanities and communication fields, including Law, Journalism, Philosophy, Literature, History, Advertising, and Audiovisual Communication.
UANDES contributes to the education sector with programs like Early Childhood Education, Basic Education, Bilingual Basic Education, and more. The university comprises nine faculties, eleven schools, and three independent academic units.
UANDES has established numerous international partnerships with universities worldwide to enhance its global reach and research endeavors.
