University of Havana Overview

The University of Havana (UH), founded on January 5, 1719, by Dominican friars of the Order of Preachers, stands as an enduring bastion of knowledge and intellectual pursuit in the heart of Cuba. The institution's inception was rooted in the ecclesiastical and royal approvals of the time, with Pope Innocent XIII and King Philip V of Spain granting the authority for its establishment. Originally known as the Royal and Pontifical University of San Gerónimo of Havana, the early university was deeply intertwined with religious influence and guidance. The founding of the University of Havana in 1728, under the auspices of Dominican friars from the Convent of San Juan de Letrán, marked a pivotal moment in Cuba's educational landscape. The institution's inaugural rector, Fray Tomás Linares del Castillo, led the charge, overseeing faculties that encompassed Arts and Philosophy, Theology, Canons, Laws, and Medicine.
