The University of Toulouse, known as the Université de Toulouse, boasts a rich history that dates back to its establishment in the year 1229. Founded as one of the earliest universities in Europe, it was born out of a unique historical context. Count Raymond VII, compelled by the Treaty of Paris, established this institution during the aftermath of the crusade against the Albigensians. The suspicion of sympathizing with heretics led Raymond VII to financially support the teaching of theology, thus setting the stage for the university's inception. Notable figures like Bishop Foulques de Toulouse, Jean de Garlande, and Roland of Cremona were among the pioneering lecturers.
Throughout its existence, the University of Toulouse evolved, adding faculties such as law and medicine. However, in 1969, it underwent a significant transformation, dividing into three separate universities and numerous specialized higher education institutions. The three universities born from this division are Toulouse 1 Capitole University, University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès, and Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier University. This restructuring marked a crucial turning point in the university's history.
Fast forward to 2023, and the University of Toulouse has experienced another significant change. On January 1st of this year, the institution rebranded itself as the University of Toulouse, aligning with its mission to enhance international recognition and visibility in the realm of higher education.
The University of Toulouse, in its current form, is a collective entity that unites 23 higher education member institutions, seven research organizations, and one University Hospital.
