The roots of the University of Bordeaux trace back to 1441 when it was established by Pope Eugene IV during a period when Bordeaux was under English rule. However, the turbulence of the French Revolution led to the university's closure in 1793. It wasn't until 1896 that it reopened, following the enactment of the law of 18 July 1896. Over the years, the university underwent transformations, leading to the creation of three separate entities: Bordeaux 1, Bordeaux 2, and Bordeaux 3 in 1970. Bordeaux 4 later split from Bordeaux 1 in 1995. Finally, in 2014, these institutions reunited to form the present-day University of Bordeaux, with the exception of Bordeaux 3, which remains independent.
