About University of Freiburg

University of Freiburg Overview

The Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, also known as ALU, was established on September 21, 1457 by Albrecht VI. It is one of Germany's oldest universities and offers a wide range of academic disciplines, making it a comprehensive university.

With a rich history and a strong academic reputation, the university enjoys both national and international recognition. Among its faculty, there have been 10 Nobel laureates and 14 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize winners. In total, the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg is associated with 23 Nobel laureates.

In 1850, the number of students at the University of Freiburg was 378, consisting of 288 local students from Baden and 90 international students. However, the student population saw significant growth starting in the 1880s. By the time of the First World War, the university had reached 3,000 students. In the early 20th century, the university needed to construct several new buildings to accommodate modern academic activities. Instead of opting for a centralized campus, the university deliberately integrated architectural highlights into the historic city center of Freiburg and its surroundings.

One of these architectural gems is the Kollegiengebäude I, the main building and home to the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Philosophy. Built in the Art Nouveau style from 1907 to 1911 according to plans by Friedrich Ratzel and Hermann Billing, it remains a prominent symbol of Freiburg. Its red sandstone facade and tower, which houses two detention rooms, contribute to its iconic status. The entrance is flanked by sculptures of Homer and Aristotle, created in 1915 by the sculptor Cipri Adolf Bermann from Vöhrenbach. Above them, the inscription reads: "AEDEM A PATRE STUDIIS DEDICATAM EREXIT FRIDERICUS II" (This building dedicated to studies was erected by the ruler Friedrich II [Grand Duke of Baden]). On the west facade, above the windows of the assembly hall, the university motto is engraved: "DIE WAHRHEIT WIRD EUCH FREI MACHEN" (The truth shall set you free).
