The Georg-August-Universität, also known as Georgia Augusta, was founded in Göttingen in 1732/1734 by Georg II of the House of Hanover, under the leadership of Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen, and inaugurated in 1737. It quickly grew to become one of the largest universities in Europe at the time, with nearly 1,000 students. As the oldest existing university in Lower Saxony, it currently has 28,358 students in the winter semester of 2021/22, making it the second-largest university in the state after Leibniz Universität Hannover. Since April 2021, Metin Tolan has been serving as the university's president. The university's excellence was recognized through the Future Concept funding within the Excellence Initiative from October 2007 to June 2012. In the 2020 World University Rankings by Times Higher Education, the Georg-August-Universität ranks 125th globally and 11th within Germany.
The Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, with approximately nine million media units as of 2019, is one of Germany's largest libraries. It also oversees several specialized information services for the sciences.
