The Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) stands as Greece's leading artistic institution, dedicated to nurturing and honing the creative talents of its students. With a history dating back to 1837, ASFA has played a pivotal role in shaping the course of Modern Greek Art. The school consists of two esteemed departments: the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Art Theory and History of Art.
The Department of Fine Arts comprises three divisions: Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking, each equipped with its own distinct artistic perspective and approach. This pluralism of expression empowers students to explore and develop their personal artistic voice. Students pursuing studies in this department have the opportunity to choose among nine Studios under the Painting Division, three Studios under the Sculpture Division, and two Studios under the Printmaking Division. The Department also incorporates lecture courses, culminating in a five-year program (or 10 semesters) leading to the prestigious "Diploma in Fine Arts."
On the other hand, the Department of Art Theory and History of Art aspires to enhance the quality of Humanities' studies in Greece through a comprehensive exploration of Art History, supported by disciplines like Philosophy of Art, Aesthetics, Museology, History of Architecture, and Anthropology of Art. With a four-year program (or 8 semesters), students graduate with a "Diploma in Art Theory and History of Art" of equivalent standing to a Bachelor's degree.
A significant milestone in ASFA's evolution occurred in 1992 when the Greek state entrusted the institution with the old textile factory of the Sikiaridis family, a remarkable mid-20th century industrial architecture, now serving as a hub for all educational and studio activities, the Library, the "Nikos Kessanlis" exhibition venue, the "Giorgio de Chirico" Auditorium, the Theatre hall, and the Cinema hall. While Rectorial Authorities and Administration Services remain in the historical building at 42 Patission street, ASFA's official headquarters.
ASFA's legacy boasts renowned Greek artists who have profoundly impacted the School's teaching staff, elevating the institution's esteemed reputation. With its distinct educational programs and artistic freedom, ASFA continues to shape the landscape of Modern Greek Art and remains an emblem of artistic excellence.
