The Universidad de Lima, a private institution located in the district of Santiago de Surco in Lima, Peru, has a rich history dating back to its founding on April 25, 1962. It was established by a group of university professors and representatives from the business and industry sectors, who came together under the banner of the "Asociación Civil PRODIES" (Promotion of Industrial Development through Higher Education).
The idea for the Universidad de Lima was conceived in 1960 by this consortium of university educators and industry stakeholders, united within the Asociación Civil Prodies. After two years of planning, it was officially founded on April 25, 1962, through Supreme Decree No. 23. Antonio Pinilla Sánchez-Concha served as its inaugural rector.
At its inception, the Universidad de Lima enrolled 120 students and consisted of two faculties. It was originally located in the district of Jesús María, at 548 Nazca Street, facing Campo de Marte. However, on August 27, 1966, the university relocated to the district of Santiago de Surco, where it inaugurated the Monterrico campus, spanning approximately 8 hectares.
The organization and governance of the Universidad de Lima involve various bodies. The University Assembly, the highest governing body, represents the university community. It includes the Rector, Vice-Rector, Deans of the faculties, representatives of regular professors (twice the number of university authorities), a graduate from each university school, and one or more student representatives from each faculty, constituting one-third of the total authorities, faculty, and graduates. The directors of the graduate school, the program for general studies, and university directors attend the Assembly as advisors.
The Board of Directors is the highest body responsible for the management, execution, and promotion of the university. It comprises the Rector (who serves as its president), Vice-Rector, Director of the graduate school, Directors of university schools, Director of the program for general studies, Directors of university planning, administration and finance, and academic development, a graduate representative, and a student representative from each university school.
The Rector, as the legal representative of the Universidad de Lima, holds a pivotal role in the university's leadership. The Vice-Rector assumes the Rector's responsibilities in cases of leave, disability, or vacancy.
Governance structures exist for each university school, the graduate school, and the program for general studies. Each has its own councils and directors responsible for overseeing its operations and academic activities.
The Universidad de Lima offers a double degree program in collaboration with the University of Queensland for business-related disciplines, granting both a bachelor's and an MBA. Starting from the current year, it also offers a double degree program with the University of London.
In terms of infrastructure, the university's primary campus in Monterrico, Santiago de Surco, spans approximately 60,751 square meters. This campus houses 140 fully-equipped classrooms, computer labs, industrial labs, a library with around 90,000 records, projection rooms, six auditoriums with an average capacity of 500 attendees each, student parking areas, a bank branch, and a bookstore, among other services.
The university also has a campus in Mayorazgo, Ate, known as "Pre Lima," covering 30,000 square meters. This campus hosts the pre-university center and the University of Lima's Sports Complex, featuring a synthetic grass football field, a futsal court, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a synthetic climbing wall, a gym, and an arena suitable for basketball and volleyball. This facility is also used for martial arts training.
The Universidad de Lima features various specialized centers, institutes, and programs. The Institute of Scientific Research, established in 1999, primarily disseminates the development and outcomes of research projects conducted by university professors at UL. Each year, the institute issues a call for research projects, allowing faculty members to present their proposals.
The Integral Center for Continuing Education specializes in providing continuous training for executives, professionals, and entrepreneurs in specific management areas. In collaboration with different academic units of the university, it designs and delivers programs and courses. Additionally, the university offers specialized programs in competencies (PEC) aimed at executives, entrepreneurs, and business professionals, covering various fields such as international financial reporting standards, investment management, integrated management systems, digital marketing management, and strategic people management.
The Universidad de Lima maintains a strong academic reputation and has consistently ranked among the top universities in Peru and Latin America in various international university rankings, considering factors such as academic reputation, employability of graduates, research citations, and web impact. In recent years, the university has been consistently ranked within the top ten nationally in certain international university rankings.
