Mugla Sitki Kocman University is a state university established in 1992, featuring four pioneering faculties: Arts & Sciences and Humanities, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Technical Education, and Fisheries. Notably, the esteemed Mugla School of Management, originally affiliated with the Ankara Academy of Economics and Administrative Sciences in 1975, became the university's first faculty upon its inception. Adding to its academic prowess, Mugla Vocational School, previously a part of Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir since 1989, joined forces with Mugla University. Originally established as Muğla University, the institution underwent a transformative change in 2012 when it was officially renamed Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University in honor of the generous benefactor Sıtkı Koçman.

At its outset, the university encompassed several faculties, including the Faculty of Science and Literature, Faculty of Aquatic Products, Faculty of Technical Education, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, as well as Institutes of Science and Social Sciences, and the School of Tourism and Hotel Management. This initial foundation laid the groundwork for the university's journey of expansion and enhancement.

Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University's commitment to offering high-quality education across diverse disciplines prompted a series of strategic developments. Over the years, numerous faculties, institutes, and vocational schools have been established. The expansion has been guided by a vision to contribute not only to academic excellence but also to the socio-cultural and technological advancement of the region and the nation as a whole.

Today, the university boasts an impressive array of academic units, including 21 faculties, 4 institutes, 3 vocational schools, and 16 vocational training schools. Its comprehensive scope is further enriched by 47 research and application centers, all situated within an expansive 208,000-square-meter campus. This growth trajectory has been mirrored by a corresponding rise in student enrollment, which currently stands at 44,607, and an accomplished academic community comprising 1,608 faculty members and a dedicated administrative team of 827 professionals.
