Dartmouth College, a distinguished private Ivy League research university located in Hanover, New Hampshire, was established in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock. As one of the nine colonial colleges predating the American Revolution, its original mission was to educate Native Americans in Christian theology and the English way of life, evolving to train Congregationalist ministers before gradually secularizing. Despite its transition into a research university, Dartmouth retains the title "Dartmouth College" to underscore its commitment to undergraduate education.
Dartmouth's liberal arts curriculum spans 40 academic departments and interdisciplinary programs, offering 60 majors in various fields, from humanities and social sciences to natural sciences and engineering. The university also houses professional and graduate schools, including the Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer School of Engineering, Tuck School of Business, and Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. With affiliations to the Dartmouth–Hitchcock Medical Center, Dartmouth's campus is home to prominent centers like the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences, the Hood Museum of Art, and the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding. With around 6,700 students, Dartmouth is the smallest Ivy League university, known for its distinct focus on undergraduate education. Its picturesque 269-acre main campus overlooks the Connecticut River and operates on a quarter system with four ten-week academic terms annually.
Dartmouth is celebrated for its strong commitment to undergraduate education, vibrant Greek culture, and cherished campus traditions. The university fields 34 varsity sports teams competing in the NCAA Division I Ivy League conference. Dartmouth boasts an illustrious roster of alumni, including 170 members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, U.S. governors, billionaires, Cabinet secretaries, Nobel Prize laureates, U.S. Supreme Court justices, and a vice president.
