Established in 1871 by Henry Solomon Lehr, Ohio Northern University (ONU) embarked on its educational journey as the Northwestern Ohio Normal School. Over time, the institution expanded its academic scope to encompass diverse fields such as pharmacy, engineering, law, and business programs. Consequently, the school underwent name changes, evolving into Ohio Normal University in 1885 and finally adopting its current identity as Ohio Northern University in 1903. Its affiliation with the United Methodist Church in 1899 played a pivotal role in alleviating financial burdens, ensuring the institution's sustainability and growth.
The institution weathered significant challenges during critical periods of history. The Great Depression and World War II precipitated a sharp decline in enrollment, with the school facing the specter of potential closure. Enrollments dwindled drastically during World War II, reaching a low of 156 students. However, the advent of the G.I. Bill facilitated a resurgence, boosting enrollment to approximately nine hundred students by 1946, marking a pivotal rebound for Ohio Northern University.
Ohio Northern University became a bastion of social activism during the 1960s, where students and faculty actively participated in the American Civil Rights Movement. The university's significant involvement culminated in a historic moment with the visit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 11, 1968. Dr. King delivered a poignant speech challenging prevailing societal myths and highlighting the struggles of African Americans. His memorable visit was commemorated with the unveiling of a statue in his honor on campus in April 2018, immortalizing his legacy at ONU.
Under successive leadership, including Dr. DeBow Freed and Dr. Kendall Baker, Ohio Northern University experienced a phase of robust growth and development throughout the latter half of the 20th century and into the present era. Numerous campus expansions and construction projects, including academic buildings, libraries, performance arts centers, stadiums, and residence halls, underscore the institution's commitment to fostering a comprehensive and modernized learning environment.
Dr. Melissa Baumann, the 12th president of Ohio Northern University (ONU), assumed her role on July 1, 2022. Prior to her appointment at ONU, she served as the provost and chief academic officer at Xavier University from 2017 to 2021. With over 30 years of experience in both public and private higher education, President Baumann has held various administrative and teaching positions at esteemed institutions such as Auburn University and Michigan State University....
