The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a prestigious private research university located in Henrietta within the Rochester, New York metropolitan area. Established in 1829, RIT has a significant student body of around 19,000 individuals, including approximately 16,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students. Its diverse student population represents all 50 states of the United States and over 100 countries worldwide. With over 4,000 dedicated faculty and staff members, RIT has gained recognition for its research endeavors, particularly as an "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" institution. RIT also extends its influence globally through its international branches in countries such as China, Croatia, Kosovo, and the United Arab Emirates.

The university traces its origins to the merger of the Rochester Athenæum, a literary society established in 1829, and The Mechanics Institute, a practical technical training school founded in 1885. Following this merger, RIT evolved over time, adapting to changing educational needs and shifting locations. In 1944, the institution transformed into the Rochester Institute of Technology, embracing a comprehensive research-focused identity. Notably, RIT's growth necessitated its move to a spacious 1,300-acre campus in Henrietta in 1968.

Throughout its history, RIT has continuously expanded its academic offerings. It is renowned for innovative programs such as microelectronic engineering, the nation's first accredited undergraduate program dedicated to semiconductor device fabrication. The university's commitment to pioneering education is further evident in being the first in the U.S. to introduce a PhD program in imaging science and the first to offer a bachelor's degree in Software Engineering. RIT's campus, characterized by its extensive use of bricks in construction, spans 1,300 acres and encompasses 237 buildings. Students affectionately refer to it as "Brick City."

RIT's focus on sustainability has earned recognition, making it a "Campus Sustainability Leader." The campus features a distinctive walkway known as the "Quarter Mile," connecting academic and residence areas. Notably, a striking stainless steel sculpture named the "Infinity Quad" by Jose' de Rivera stands at the heart of this pathway, symbolizing time and infinity. Additionally, a monumental steel sculpture called "The Sentinel" by Albert Paley adorns the campus, showcasing RIT's commitment to art and innovation.
