he University of Mary Washington (UMW) is a distinguished public liberal arts university located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Originally established in 1908 as the Fredericksburg Teachers College, it was later renamed Mary Washington College in 1938 to honor Mary Ball Washington, the mother of George Washington, the first President of the United States. In 2004, the institution underwent a transformation and was renamed the University of Mary Washington to reflect the inclusion of graduate and professional programs alongside the undergraduate curriculum.
UMW offers a wide range of academic opportunities across its three colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education. Students can choose from over 60 majors and programs, and a significant number of undergraduate students take part in study abroad programs offered in 56 countries. The university has a rich history, being associated with the University of Virginia as its women's college until 1972 when it became a separate, coeducational institution.
