Rich History and Founding

The roots of UMD trace back to 1957 when land from Henry Ford's Fair Lane estate, recognized as a U.S. National Historic Landmark, was generously donated to establish the Dearborn campus. Over the years, the university has thrived, cultivating a vibrant student life and fostering a community of over 125 recognized student organizations (RSOs) and 9 university-sponsored organizations (USOs). These organizations span a diverse spectrum, including Greek Life, Academic/Professional Organizations, Cultural and Ethnic Organizations, Honor Societies, Political and Social Activist Organizations, Recreational Organizations, and Religious and Spiritual Organizations.

Student-Centered Campus Life

The campus pulsates with student-driven initiatives and activities. The Michigan Journal, serving as the university's student newspaper since 1971, stands as a testament to student expression and journalistic endeavor. Similarly, WUMD, the student radio station established in 1979, epitomizes creative diversity through its eclectic musical programs and live broadcasts of UMD sporting events.

Physical Campus and Facilities

UMD's physical landscape encompasses distinct sections, including The Henry Ford Estate, known as Fair Lane, The Fairlane Center, Main Campus, and the Early Childhood Education Center. Sprawling over 70 acres, the campus boasts a nature preserve and the Rouge River Bird Observatory, a pioneering urban bird research station operational since 1992, further solidifying the university's commitment to environmental preservation and scientific inquiry.

The Main Campus houses an array of facilities, including the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL), the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), the Environmental Interpretive Center, Administration buildings, the Mardigian Library, the Institute for Advanced Vehicle Studies, the University Center, the Computing Building, and the Fieldhouse. These spaces serve as hubs for diverse programs, research centers, student life activities, and academic resources, enriching the educational experience for all.

Founding Principles and Development

In December 1956, the Ford family's pivotal contribution of land and capital development funds laid the foundation for the creation of UMD, offering upper-division undergraduate and master's level programs. This visionary gift was officially accepted by the Regents of the University of Michigan in February 1957, marking the university's inception. Emphasizing real-world experience, the Dearborn campus incorporated cooperative work-study requirements in business administration and engineering, elevating students' employability. Collaborating with the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the campus provided comprehensive liberal arts and professional courses to ensure a holistic education for its students. Construction commenced in May 1958, culminating in the appointment of William E. Stirton as its first director on October 1 of that year.
