About Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University Overview

Vanderbilt University, affectionately known as Vandy or VU, stands as a distinguished private research university situated in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1873, the university bears the name of Cornelius Vanderbilt, a prominent shipping and rail magnate. His generous $1-million endowment aimed to foster healing and unity in the aftermath of the Civil War. Vanderbilt University holds the distinction of being a founding member of the Southeastern Conference and remains the conference's sole private school since 1966.

Comprising ten esteemed schools, Vanderbilt University attracts approximately 13,800 students from across the United States and over 100 foreign countries. The university's dedication to research and academic excellence places it in the category of "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." Numerous research centers and institutes, such as the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities, the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center, and Dyer Observatory, are affiliated with the university. In 2016, Vanderbilt University Medical Center transitioned into a separate institution. Spanning a 330-acre campus in the heart of Nashville, with the exception of an off-campus observatory, all of the university's facilities are conveniently located just 1.5 miles from downtown.

Vanderbilt University boasts an illustrious roster of alumni, faculty, and staff who have achieved great distinction. Notable individuals associated with the institution include current and former members of the United States Congress, U.S. Ambassadors, governors, Nobel Prize laureates, Vice Presidents of the United States, and U.S. Supreme Court Justices. Additionally, the university has produced Pulitzer Prize winners, Rhodes Scholars, Academy Award winners, Grammy Award winners, MacArthur Fellows, foreign heads of state, and Olympic medalists. With over 145,000 alumni worldwide and 40 established alumni clubs, Vanderbilt University's impact extends far beyond its campus.

The university's origins can be traced back to the years preceding the American Civil War when the Methodist Episcopal Church South sought to establish a regional university for ministerial training. The efforts to create "The Central University of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South" gained momentum in 1872 through the advocacy of Nashville bishop Holland Nimmons McTyeire. However, financial constraints and the challenging post-war environment delayed the college's opening.

In late 2019, Vanderbilt University welcomed Daniel Diermeier as its ninth chancellor following an extensive search conducted by the Board of Trust. Renowned as a visionary leader, political scientist, and management scholar, Diermeier assumed his role in July 2020, immediately prioritizing the safe return of students to campus amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
