Washington State University Overview

Washington State University (WSU or Wazzu) stands as a prominent public land-grant research university, with its flagship campus nestled in the picturesque town of Pullman, Washington. Established in 1890, WSU is one of the oldest land-grant universities in the American West. With an impressive undergraduate enrollment of 24,278 and a total enrollment of 28,581, it ranks as the second-largest higher education institution in Washington state, following the University of Washington. Recognized as an "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity," WSU offers a vibrant campus characterized by red brick and basalt materials, echoing the surrounding Palouse's rolling topography in rural eastern Washington.

WSU's academic influence extends beyond Pullman, with additional campuses founded in 1989 at WSU Spokane, WSU Tri-Cities, and WSU Vancouver. In 2012, the university launched the Internet-based Global Campus, introducing WSU Online degree programs, while also expanding to a sixth campus at WSU Everett in 2015. These campuses primarily award bachelor's and master's degrees, offering students diverse educational opportunities across the state.

Affectionately known as the Cougars, WSU's athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I within the Pac-12 Conference. The university's vibrant school colors of crimson and gray embody the team spirit and camaraderie on and off the field.

WSU's origins trace back to the Morrill Act of 1862, which paved the way for the establishment of land-grant colleges focused on agriculture and the mechanic arts. The Hatch Act of 1887 further solidified WSU's mission by providing federal funding for agricultural experiment stations. Soon after gaining statehood in 1889, the Washington State Legislature took swift action to create the Agricultural College, Experiment Station, and School of Science of the State of Washington, eventually expanding the school's mission to include arts and sciences.

After thorough evaluation of potential sites, Pullman emerged as the chosen location due to its generous land gift and strategic railroad connections. On January 13, 1892, WSU opened its doors to 59 students, offering courses in agriculture, engineering, and domestic science. Since then, WSU has continued to evolve, fostering a culture of innovation, research excellence, and community engagement, solidifying its position as a leading institution in Washington state and beyond.
