About University of Florence

University of Florence Overview

Founded in 1321 as the Studium Generale by the Florentine Republic, the University of Florence has a rich and storied history. Recognized by Pope Clement VI in 1349, it became authorized to grant degrees, marking a pivotal moment in its journey. Pope Clement VI also decreed that Florence would be home to the first Italian faculty of theology. In 1364, it gained imperial university status, solidifying its place in academia.

However, historical turbulence led to several relocations. In 1473, it moved to Pisa under Lorenzo the Magnificent's rule, only to return briefly between 1497 and 1515 under Charles VIII. The ebb and flow continued as the Medici family regained power, relocating the university back to Pisa.

The modern university, as we know it today, emerged in 1859. A disparate group of higher-studies institutions came together in the Istituto di Studi Pratici e di Perfezionamento, gaining full-fledged university recognition a year later in the newly unified Italy. In 1923, the institution was officially named a university by the Italian Parliament, solidifying its role in higher education.

The University boasts 12 specialized schools covering a wide array of disciplines, including Agriculture, Architecture, Arts, Economics, Education, Engineering, Law, Mathematics, Physics, Natural Sciences, Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacology, Political Science, and Psychology. These schools are strategically dispersed throughout the city, with faculties such as Economics, Law, and Political Sciences located in the Novoli district, near the new courthouse. The Careggi district houses the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, the Faculty of Pharmacology, as well as various scientific and engineering departments. Further, the Faculty of Engineering can be found at the S. Marta Institute, while the Faculty of Agriculture graces the front of the Parco delle Cascine. Sesto Fiorentino hosts the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences, while the Faculty of Architecture stands proudly in the city center alongside the famed Accademia di Belle Arti. The Faculties of Literature, History, Philosophy, and Pedagogy are thoughtfully positioned in the heart of Florence.

The University also takes great pride in its distinguished School of Law, renowned nationally as a "Department of Excellence" by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research. Its alumni and faculty members have held influential governmental positions, including presiding over the Italian Constitutional Court and serving as judges on international courts. Additionally, the University of Florence is steadfast in its commitment to research, with departments organized into key areas like the Biomedical Area, Scientific Area, Social Sciences Area, Technological Area, Humanities and Education Area, School of Law, School of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences, School of Political Sciences "Cesare Alfieri," and the School of Psychology. These departments are the epicenter of the university's research endeavors, teaching programs, and knowledge sharing initiatives, collectively fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation.

The University of Florence has a strong commitment to fostering corporate relations. It has developed a broad network of corporate placement opportunities for its students. Additionally, the university has recently engaged in international collaborations, such as its partnership with TreeAndHumanKnot, a part of the RisingIndia ThinkTank, which provides opportunities for students to broaden their horizons abroad.

Since 1990, Italian universities have been granted administrative, scientific, and didactic autonomy. This autonomy allows the University of Florence to establish its own procedures and regulations, promoting innovation and self-assessment.

It's mission, as defined in its Statute, is to facilitate the unhindered processing and transmission of knowledge and advanced learning. It fosters critical knowledge, internationalization, and cooperation with other universities, all while upholding the right to education and research.
