The Universidad Científica del Sur (UCSUR) stands as a prominent private university situated in Lima, Peru, renowned for its academic programs, diverse campuses, and contributions to sustainable development.
Established in 1998 by distinguished figures within the educational sector, UCSUR has evolved into a hub of academic excellence and innovation. Its inception was a result of the collaborative efforts of visionary representatives who aimed to create an institution that would play a pivotal role in shaping the nation's educational landscape.
The university's commitment to academic rigor and comprehensive education is reflected in its diverse campus locations across Lima, including Villa El Salvador, Los Olivos, Ate, and Miraflores. Each campus serves as a testament to UCSUR's dedication to providing accessible education to students from diverse backgrounds.
In its early days, UCSUR embarked on its journey with programs in Medicine and Systems Engineering. Over the years, the university expanded its offerings to include a wide spectrum of disciplines, currently offering 23 undergraduate programs, 14 master's programs, and specialized courses across various fields. This broad academic portfolio underscores UCSUR's commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals equipped to tackle the challenges of the modern world.
The university's history is rooted in the collective efforts of distinguished educational figures, led by President José Dextre Chacón, who shared a common vision of creating an institution that would stand as a beacon of educational excellence. This vision became a reality when, on February 5, 1998, the Consejo Nacional para la Autorización de Funcionamiento de Universidades (CONAFU) granted authorization for UCSUR's establishment through Resolution No. 356-98-CONAFU.
UCSUR's inaugural leadership was led by the visionary Dr. Fernando Cabieses Molina, who served as the first Rector of the university, and supported by individuals such as Dr. José Chacón Polar, a distinguished medical professional known for his contributions to medical education. The university's journey officially commenced with its opening on March 26, 1998, at the Pedro de Osma Museum.
In its quest to provide high-quality education, UCSUR has consistently expanded its academic offerings and facilities. From its modest beginnings with 50 students enrolled in Medicine and Systems Engineering, the university has experienced substantial growth in both student enrollment and academic diversity.
The year 2002 marked a significant milestone with the inclusion of esteemed researcher and former rector of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, José Amiel Pérez, as Vice President of Academic Affairs. Under his leadership, the university's research initiatives gained momentum, reinforcing UCSUR's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge.
UCSUR's commitment to research and innovation is also evident in its infrastructure development. Collaborating with Fondo Latam Perú, the university embarked on an expansion plan that included the construction of the Pabellón de Posgrado in the district of San Borja. Although the project encountered challenges, it stands as a testament to UCSUR's dedication to providing state-of-the-art facilities for its academic community.
Over the years, UCSUR's contributions to academic research and development have earned it a place of prominence in national and international rankings. These rankings, which consider factors such as academic reputation, employability of graduates, research citations, and web impact, consistently position UCSUR among the top 15 universities in Peru.
As UCSUR continues to evolve and innovate, it remains committed to its core mission of providing transformative education, fostering research, and contributing to sustainable development. The university's multi-campus presence, diverse academic offerings, and commitment to research excellence set it apart as a dynamic institution shaping the future of education in Peru and beyond.
