Bosphorus University Overview

Boğaziçi University (also known as Bosphorus University) is a prestigious public university located in Istanbul, Turkey. Its roots trace back to the establishment of Robert College by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher Robert on September 16, 1863. After more than a century of operating as part of Robert College, the South Campus was transferred to the Republic of Turkey on September 10, 1971, to form an independent university, Boğaziçi University.

Today, Boğaziçi University encompasses a total area of 1,672,106 m² and boasts seven campuses. The university provides education in English and has become a top choice for students who score high in the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) in Turkey. In various years, Boğaziçi University ranked first among the most preferred universities across all score types in YKS.

The university's history dates back to the establishment of Robert College in Bebek, where it started with four male students in an old wooden building. Over time, Robert College expanded with the addition of various buildings, becoming a well-known educational institution. With financial challenges preceding and following the 1929 Great Depression, the college saw changes in leadership and eventually combined its administration with the American Girls College in 1932.

On January 26, 1971, Boğaziçi University's Board of Trustees accepted a proposal to establish an independent university under the name Boğaziçi University, encouraging the Turkish government to take over Robert College. The Turkish Grand National Assembly started discussing the transfer of the school, and on September 10, 1971, the 118-acre area of the current South Campus, including its buildings, library, and laboratories, was officially transferred to Turkey, marking the birth of Boğaziçi University. At the same time, Robert College and American Girls College merged and continued under the same name, offering co-educational programs.

Boğaziçi University boasts seven campuses, five of which are on the European side of Istanbul, and two on the Asian side. The campuses cover a total area of 1,672,106 m². The South Campus, located in Bebek, serves as the main campus and includes historical buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The North Campus, Hisar Campus, and Anti-Aircraft Campus are the other campuses located in Bebek. Additionally, the Sarıtepe Campus in Kilyos, situated on the Black Sea coast, serves as the preparatory campus for students. The Kandilli Campus, located in Üsküdar, is the university's first campus on the Asian side of Istanbul, housing the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute.

Boğaziçi University operates under a democratic, participatory, autonomous, and liberal university governance model. The University Board of Trustees and the University Senate are the main governing bodies with the most influence in the administration. The academic management is ensured by faculty deans, institute directors, and department heads.

The university has a diverse student population, with 14,836 students as of the 2022-23 academic year, consisting of 6,778 female students and 8,058 male students. Boğaziçi University is renowned for its English-taught programs and is the highest-scoring university in Turkey in all score types of YKS.

Boğaziçi University boasts seven faculties: Education, Arts and Sciences, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering, Administrative Sciences, Law, and Communication. In addition to the faculties, there are two schools: the School of Applied Disciplines and the School of Foreign Languages. The university also hosts seven institutes, including the Institute of Atatürk's Principles and Revolution History, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Institute of Environmental Sciences, the Institute of Science, the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, the Confucius Institute, and the Institute of Social Sciences. Recently, the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Institute was established.

Boğaziçi University is committed to academic excellence and international collaboration. It has signed exchange agreements with over 500 universities worldwide and has been a part of the Erasmus program since 2004. The university actively encourages its students to participate in international exchange programs.

Boğaziçi University Kütüphanesi, the university library, has been continuously developing since its inception. It holds a diverse collection of approximately 663,982 materials and serves as an academic library with an open-shelf system, providing seating for up to 1,000 people. The library receives thousands of daily visits, lends hundreds of books, and offers access to various electronic resources, including articles and books.
