Gazi University Overview

Gazi University, located in Ankara, Turkey, is a prestigious public university originally established in 1926 as Gazi Teacher Training Institute by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Over the years, it has undergone reorganization and mergers with other institutions, such as the Bolu Academy of Engineering and Architecture, Ankara Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences, and more. This has resulted in the formation of a large metropolitan university governed by the Board of Higher Education. Gazi University comprises 21 faculties, 4 schools, 11 vocational schools of higher education, 52 research centers, and 7 graduate institutes, with a student enrollment of approximately 77,000, including students from Central Asian Turkic states. The university boasts a teaching faculty of over 3,000 individuals.

Gazi University has achieved notable rankings in various assessments. In the URAP Turkish University Rankings of 2021, it secured the 6th position overall and ranked 4th in the fields of Engineering and Technology in Turkey. According to CWUR, Gazi University ranks 844th in the 2022 World University Rankings. In the QS Rankings for 2021, it falls within the 801-1000 category, while in the same rankings for 2022, Gazi University ranks 21st worldwide in the field of education and holds the top position in Turkey for the same subject. Additionally, Gazi University is ranked 653rd in the World University Rankings by RUR in 2022.

Gazi University boasts multiple campuses situated throughout Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, allowing students easy access to housing and shopping centers. These campuses host a wide range of student activities, including festivals, concerts, sports tournaments, theatre performances, and scientific and cultural seminars.

The university's central library offers an extensive collection, including 150,000 books, 62,000 bound periodicals, and 10,000 master theses. It also provides access to a vast number of online journals and databases. Library orientation programs are organized to familiarize new Gazi University students with the available resources.

Gazi University has achieved significant medical milestones as well. On March 17, 2012, the university's hospital conducted Turkey's third face transplant, specifically a partial face transplant, on Hatice Nergis, a twenty-year-old woman. Led by surgeon Selahattin Özmen, the medical team successfully performed the procedure on a patient who had lost her upper jaw, mouth, lips, palate, teeth, and nasal cavity six years prior due to a firearm accident. This groundbreaking surgery improved the patient's ability to eat, following her previous reconstructive plastic surgery operations.
