The University of Delaware (UD), known as UD or Delaware, is a privately governed, state-assisted research university situated in Newark, Delaware. With three associate's programs, 148 bachelor's programs, 121 master's programs, 55 doctoral programs, and eight colleges, UD is the largest university in Delaware. It boasts satellite campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes, and Georgetown, along with its main campus in Newark. As a significant educational institution, it serves around 18,200 undergraduate and 4,200 graduate students. Recognized for its high research activity, UD received $186 million in research and development funding in 2018, earning it a ranking of 119th in the nation. Additionally, it holds the Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
The university is affectionately known as the "Fightin' Blue Hens", with blue and gold as its school colors. It sponsors 21 NCAA Division-I sports teams, competing in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) since 2001. UD's roots trace back to 1743 when Francis Alison established a "Free School" in Pennsylvania. The institution went through multiple name and location changes before settling in Newark in 1765. Eventually, it received a charter from the colonial Penn government in 1769 as the Academy of Newark. In 1834, Newark College emerged, and by 1843, its name changed to Delaware College.
Facing financial struggles due to loss of lottery proceeds, the college reopened in 1870 with agricultural courses as required by its land-grant status. Women were admitted between 1872 and 1885. The college was revitalized with federal funding through the Hatch Act in 1887, enabling the establishment of an agricultural experiment station and improvements to facilities. It was renamed the University of Delaware in 1921 and became coeducational in 1945 by merging with the Women's College of Delaware. Over the years, UD's enrollment and academic programs expanded significantly, and it continues to thrive as a prominent institution of higher education.
