Tennessee - United States
The University of Tennessee, commonly referred to as UT Knoxville or UTK, is a prominent public land-grant research university situated in Knoxville, Tennessee. Established in 1794, just prior to Tennessee becoming the 16th state, it stands as the flagship campus of the broader University of Tennessee system. With its impressive array of ten undergraduate and eleven graduate colleges, the university draws over 30,000 students from all 50 states of the U.S. and more than 100 countries worldwide. The institution is renowned for its "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" classification.
The university maintains a valuable partnership with the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which originated under UT President Andrew Holt and continues as part of the UT–Battelle collaboration. This connection offers substantial research prospects for both faculty and students. Notably associated with the university are the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, and the expansive University of Tennessee Arboretum, spanning 250 acres within Oak Ridge and housing a diverse array of indigenous plant species.
Furthermore, the University of Tennessee holds a distinctive distinction as the only institution in the nation to manage three presidential papers editing projects. The university possesses collections of the papers of three U.S. presidents with Tennessee roots—Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and Andrew Johnson. The institution boasts a notable history, producing nine Rhodes Scholars among its alumni and celebrating the accomplishment of alumnus James M. Buchanan, who received the prestigious 1986 Nobel Prize in Economics. As one of the oldest public universities in the United States, and the oldest secular institution located west of the Eastern Continental Divide, UT Knoxville stands as a testament to academic heritage.
The university's journey began in September 1794, two years prior to Tennessee's statehood, when Blount College was established under a charter during a Southwest Territory legislature meeting in Knoxville. Initially an all-male, non-sectarian institution, it faced early challenges with limited enrollment and faculty. The institution was later rechartered as East Tennessee College in 1807 to receive proceeds from the Compact of 1806. Following a temporary closure after its first president's death, the college reopened in 1820 and began contemplating relocation. By 1828, the university had moved to the present site known as "The Hill." In 1840, it was renamed East Tennessee University (ETU). Notably, ETU stood out as a non-religiously affiliated institution, a rarity for its era, making it the oldest such establishment west of the Appalachian Divide.
