Benno Albrecht, the Rector of Iuav University of Venice for the term 2021-2027, is a name synonymous with excellence in architecture and education. Benno Albrecht began his academic voyage at Iuav University, where he had the privilege of learning from architectural luminaries like Vittorio de Feo, Vittorio Gregotti, and Leonardo Benevolo. His educational foundation at Iuav became the cornerstone of his illustrious career.

His portfolio boasts numerous accolades and awards for his architectural creations and projects. Notably, he has triumphed in both national and international design competitions. His expertise extends to urban planning as well, having contributed to the formulation of several regulatory plans, including Venice's current urban plan.

His passion for teaching has taken him to universities and research centers across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. At Iuav University, he holds the prestigious position of a full professor of architectural and urban composition.

Benno's commitment to sustainability in architecture is evident in his founding of the master's degree program in architecture for sustainability. This groundbreaking program, the first of its kind in Italy and among the pioneers in Europe, underscores his dedication to environmentally responsible design.

Innovation and transformation are key themes in Benno's career. He played a pivotal role in revamping the Masters and the Doctoral School at Iuav University. Alongside Alberto Ferlenga, he introduced the innovative "Iuav Abroad" format, fostering a global network of Iuav alumni, academics, and professionals engaged in teaching and work abroad. He served as the Director of the Doctoral School and co-director of the EPIC Earth and Polis Research Center, an international hub dedicated to resilient cities and reconstruction.

His research endeavors have garnered international recognition. Albrecht has led research projects for esteemed organizations such as the World Bank, UN ESCWA (Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia), and UNDP (United Nations Development Programme). His research focuses on sustainability and urban heritage, with a special emphasis on post-conflict urban and social reconstruction in North African and Middle Eastern countries.

Benno Albrecht's body of work includes around 260 research products, including the groundbreaking "Syria the Making of the Future - From Urbicide to the Architecture of the City" (2017), which introduced a new format at Iuav University. His book "Conservare il Futuro" (2012) contemplates sustainability and trans-generational inheritance and is currently being translated into Spanish. Additionally, "The Origins of Architecture" (2002), co-authored with Leonardo Benevolo, remains a cornerstone in architectural literature.
