Enrico Felice Gherlone is a distinguished figure in the world of dentistry and academia. As of November 8, 2018, he has taken on the prestigious role of Rector at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, where he also serves as Vice-President of the Board of Directors.
Born on January 20, 1956, in Genoa, Italy, Enrico embarked on his academic journey at the University of Genoa. In 1983, he achieved his Medical Degree, followed by specialization in Dentistry in 1986.
Enrico Gherlone's illustrious career in dentistry began to flourish when he took on the position of Professor of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Madrid in 1985/86. His dedication to the field led him to become a Professor in Fixed Prosthodontics at the University of Genoa from 1988 to 1996. During this time, he also served as the Medical Executive at the Dental Clinic of the University of Genoa. Later, in 1996, he assumed the role of Medical Executive and Head of Prosthodontics at the Dentistry Unit of San Raffaele Scientific Institute.
In 1998, Enrico Gherlone took the helm as the Head of the Dentistry Unit at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute. His influence expanded further as he became a Professor of Prosthodontics at the Degree Course in Dentistry at the University of Milan from 1996 to 2003.
Throughout his career, Enrico Gherlone has actively contributed to the field of dentistry and beyond. He served as the President of the Italian Association for Clinical Gnathology from 2000 to 2004. His expertise was recognized in various ministerial activities, where he played a pivotal role in developing guidelines for oral health and prevention.
Gherlone's dedication extends internationally. He was awarded the William Laney Award by the Academy of Osseointegration in the USA in February 2016. His commitment to research is evident through his role as the Director of the Specialization School in Oral Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
In May 2017, he received the "Dental Materials Awards" from the European Federation of Conservative Dentistry. Enrico Gherlone contributions to dentistry and academia are extensive, and his journey continues as he coordinates the technical committee of the Italian Ministry of Health for the "Operative indications for dental activity during the phase 2 of Covid-19 pandemic" since April 10, 2020.
