About Luigi Ambrosio

Luigi Ambrosio Overview

Luigi Ambrosio, born on January 27, 1963, in Alba, is an esteemed Italian mathematician deeply engaged in the field of analysis.

His academic journey commenced in 1981 when he began studying mathematics at the University of Pisa. His dedication and prowess led him to earn his diploma (Laurea) with the highest honors, summa cum laude, under the mentorship of Ennio de Giorgi in 1985. He further pursued his doctoral studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore until 1988. Over the years, he held various academic positions, including being a Research Assistant at the University of Rome (Tor Vergata) from 1988 to 1992, an Assistant Professor at the University of Pisa in 1992, a Professor at the University of Benevento from 1994, and a Professor at the University of Pavia from 1995. Eventually, in 1997, he rose to the position of Professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.

Ambrosio's academic endeavors revolve around a fascinating array of mathematical domains. His research interests include Variational Calculus, Geometric Measure Theory, and the intricate theory of Optimal Transport, coupled with its applications to Partial Differential Equations.

His contributions haven't gone unnoticed. He was bestowed with the Bartolozzi Prize by the Unione Matematica Italiana in 1991, and in 1999, he received the Caccioppoli Prize from the same organization. His influence has also been felt in various prestigious mathematical gatherings. Notably, he was a guest speaker at the 2nd European Congress of Mathematics in Budapest in 1996, presented a plenary talk on Optimal transportation and evolution problems in spaces of probability measures at the European Congress of Mathematics in Amsterdam in 2008, and delivered a significant speech on Optimal transport maps in Monge-Kantorovich-Problem at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing in 2002.

Luigi Ambrosio's exceptional contributions have led to his membership in esteemed institutions. He became a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei in 2005 and the Istituto Lombardo in 2006. The year 2003 brought him the Fermat Prize, further solidifying his position in the mathematical community. The year 2018 saw him as a Plenary Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio, where he discussed the captivating subjects of calculus, heat flow, and curvature-dimension bounds in metric measure spaces.

For his outstanding achievements, Ambrosio received the Blaise-Pascal Medal and the Balzan Prize in 2019, two of the most coveted recognitions in the mathematical realm. His influential role extends to his editorial commitments, including co-editorships for prominent journals such as Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations, and the Journal of the European Mathematical Society.

In acknowledgment of his contributions, Luigi Ambrosio was invited to participate in the Abel Prize Committee for the years 2015/16 and 2016/17. Additionally, since 2013, he holds the esteemed membership of the Academia Europaea, a testament to his impact in the European academic community.
