Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, the current chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston, holds the distinction of being the first Latino to lead a campus in the Massachusetts public university system. Prior to his appointment, he served as the inaugural UCLA Wasserman Dean at UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. In January 2018, Suárez-Orozco was appointed by Pope Francis to the Executive Committee of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 17. After attending community college, he pursued his higher education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned an AB in psychology (1980), a master's degree (1981), and a PhD in anthropology (1986).
