Sergio Cavalieri Overview

Sergio Cavalieri, currently serves as the rector and as a Professor at the University of Bergamo. He holds the prestigious position of Director at CELS - Research Center on Logistics and After Sales Services. He obtained his degree in Management and Production Engineering with top honors from Politecnico of Milano and further pursued his academic journey by completing his Ph.D. at the University of Padua.

Upon joining the University of Bergamo, Cavalieri assumed the role of coordinating research and educational endeavors within the Operations Management group. His contributions to the university's graduate study program are noteworthy, particularly in the areas of Operations Management, Integrated Logistics Systems, Industrial Plant Engineering, and Service Management courses.

In the realm of post-graduate education, he has demonstrated his leadership by serving as the Director of the Master in Industrial Maintenance Management at the Università degli Studi di Bergamo, in collaboration with MIP-Politecnico di Milano.

Sergio Cavalieri's dedication to research in the field of after-sales services is commendable. He played a pivotal role as the national coordinator and local scientific lead in the "ASAP" project, which focused on advanced logistic and organizational models for the integrated management of after-sales services for durable goods, generously funded by the Italian Ministry of Research. His ongoing commitment led to the establishment of the ASAP - Service Management Forum, a consortium of 50 associated industrial companies, consultancies, and research centers. This initiative aimed to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing in industries such as automotive, domestic appliances, consumer electronics, and IT.

Cavalieri's contributions extend to the world of academia, with the publication of two books and over 100 papers in national and international journals, as well as presentations in esteemed conference proceedings. He is actively engaged in professional networks, such as IFAC's TC 5.1 on Advanced Manufacturing Technology, and has previously served as a coordinator of a Special Interest Group within the IMS Network of Excellence. Furthermore, he was a former member of the Technical Development Steering Committee of the Supply Chain Council.

His journey of knowledge includes experiences as a Visiting Scientist at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, supported by a Fulbright scholarship, and the completion of his Ph.D. thesis on "Application of multiagent architectures for scheduling and control of production systems" at Politecnico di Milano. His Master of Science degree, also from Politecnico di Milano, was accompanied by a research scholarship from the Innovation Center of the Lecco Province, focusing on layout planning and simulation techniques for assembly lines. His research activities have been comprehensive, spanning from industrial plant engineering to intelligent manufacturing systems.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Sergio Cavalieri has actively contributed to the growth and development of various institutions and organizations. He currently serves as a member of the Technical and Scientific Committee of AFIL (Associazione Fabbrica Intelligente Lombardia) and as a Board Member at U4I (University for Innovation). Moreover, he has been the Director of CELS, an esteemed Research Group on Industrial Engineering, Logistics, and Service Operations, and the Director of MeGMI (Master in Maintenance Management). Additionally, Professor Cavalieri has held the position of Full Professor at the University of Bergamo since 2001.

Sergio Cavalieri's impact extends to the realm of research policymaking, as he has been a member of the Scientific Committee for the National Research Plan (PNR) under the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research. Moreover, he has served as the President of AIDI (Associazione Italiana dei Docenti di Impianti Industriali), an organization representing the field of Industrial Systems Engineering in Italy.
