Founded on December 6, 1961, by the visionary Reverend Father William Daniel Morris Christy, UCSM emerged as a transformative force in Arequipa's educational landscape. Originally from Missouri, Reverend Father Morris's journey led him to Arequipa, where he translated his dream of establishing the Catholic University of Santa María into reality. With the government's endorsement, UCSM was formally established, becoming the second oldest private university in Peru. The university commenced its operations on April 9, 1962, within the walls of the historic Casona. Subsequently, it expanded its footprint, relocating to its present headquarters in Urb. San José s/n, Umacollo, boasting a sprawling campus spanning an impressive 75,600 square meters.
UCSM's growth and development have been greatly bolstered by the unwavering support of entities such as Southern Perú and IPC. This backing resulted in the creation of the iconic "Las Esclavitas" building, which houses the Central Administration and the Graduate School. Additionally, the university boasts substantial land assets, including the Majes Project and the Chapioco Estate. Such expansion demonstrates UCSM's dedication to providing an enriched educational experience that aligns with the evolving needs of students and society.

Anchored in a commitment to nurturing high-caliber professionals, the Graduate School's academic portfolio spans humanities, sciences, and technology. It is a place where aspiring researchers and professionals converge to engage in transformative learning experiences that equip them for leadership roles in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
Research occupies a central place in UCSM's academic endeavors. The institution actively collaborates with diverse sectors, fostering a culture of innovation and interdisciplinary cooperation. This approach not only enriches the academic experience but also contributes significantly to societal development, in line with UCSM's vision of becoming a third-generation research university.
