Firat (Euphrates) University Overview

Fırat University, formerly known as Elazığ Higher Technical School, is a state university that was established in 1967. It started as a Technical College and later transformed into Elazığ State Engineering and Architecture Academy (EDMMA) in 1969. In the same year, the establishment of Elazığ Veterinary Faculty was approved by the Ministry of National Education. The university's core was formed by Fırat University Veterinary Faculty, which was established in 1970 under the supervision of Ankara University. The foundation of Fırat University was solidified with the enactment of Law No. 1873, titled "Law on the Establishment of Four Universities," on April 1, 1975. The university began its educational activities with three faculties and later expanded with the addition of the Faculty of Science and Literature in the 1975-1976 academic year. EDMMA was converted into the Faculty of Engineering within the university structure. On December 14, 2021, Fırat University was designated as a Research University.

The university boasts a library with approximately 105,000 books and 962 periodicals. The library provides study spaces on the second floor for reading and studying, while the first floor offers computer stations for internet access. Periodicals can be found on the basement floor, and visitors can keep up with national newspapers and monthly magazines from the library's entrance floor.

Within the Engineering campus, there is the Elazığ Archaeology and Ethnography Museum. The campus also houses the Atatürk Cultural Center, which has a capacity of around 1,000 people and serves as a venue for cinema, concerts, theater performances, symposiums, conferences, and panels. The Faculty of Science has a conference hall with a capacity of 250 people, while the Veterinary Faculty has a conference hall with a capacity of 400 people. The campus features an art gallery that exhibits the artistic works of students from relevant departments as well as external individuals.

The Faculty of Science has the Fırat Cultural Park, occupying an area of 51,250 square meters, which is used for ceremonies, concerts, and other events. The park includes an amphitheater, running track, basketball court, cafeteria, and open tea garden.

Fırat University is also home to Fırat Technopark, the managing company of the Fırat University Technology Development Zone. Operating under the regulations of Law No. 4691 on Technology Development Zones, Fırat Technopark provides high-standard technopark services to technology companies involved in research and development, especially in new and advanced technology fields, as well as software development.
