Marmara University Overview

Marmara University, named after the Sea of Marmara, has a rich history dating back to 1883 when it was established as Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Âlisi. Since its official founding as a university in 1982, it has become a prestigious institution in Turkey, offering courses in Turkish, English, German, French, and Arabic. With 13 campuses, 11 institutes, 8 colleges, and 28 research centers, Marmara University stands as the only multilingual university in Turkey. Notable alumni include Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, comic actor Kemal Sunal, and media mogul Aydın Doğan.

With over 3,000 faculty members and a student body exceeding 60,000 across various campuses in Istanbul, Marmara University has excelled in fields such as Medicine, Law, and Fine Arts. The university follows democratic principles and emphasizes student participation in line with Turkey's constitution. It boasts a diverse faculty, including professors, researchers, lecturers, and administrative personnel. Currently, it educates approximately 57,000 students, with 1,354 international students from 73 countries. The university maintains international standards in education and actively engages in scientific, cultural, and sports activities.

Marmara University takes pride in its international affiliations, including membership in the European University Association (EUA) and participation in programs such as ABET for Engineering and Technical Education. The faculties of Economics and Administrative Sciences, along with the Institute of Social Sciences, are preparing for quality assessment by EQUIS, a renowned international accreditation system. The Faculty of Law actively participates in prestigious international moot court competitions, further enhancing the university's reputation.

To foster international connections, Marmara University consistently develops partnerships with European universities through programs like Erasmus/Socrates. Many academic units within the university have successfully established student and lecturer exchanges with renowned European institutions. The International Office and the ESN Marmara organization provide support to foreign students, while the university's Management Club organizes an annual 'International Week' to promote cultural exchange.

Marmara University has been highly efficient in the Erasmus Programme, sending over 1,097 students abroad and hosting 839 European students. The university also offers free intensive language courses in Turkish for foreign students and has received recognition from the European Commission with the European Language Label award.
